Rounding the Cape of Good Hope

(Play for 7th Graders - Self published)

I wrote this play for my class of 25 7th graders, wishing to give them the opportunity of performing dramatically what they were also covering in the curriculum. The Voyages of Discovery, especially the early sailings down along the coast of Africa, as initiated by Henry the Navigator, and the subsequent journeys by Bartholomew Dias and Vasco da Gama have interested me since my own school days - having rounded the Cape of Good Hope twice myself, when, as a child, our family sailed from Italy to Cape Town (on a passenger liner). I endeavored to impart to the students an imaginative and living account of the time. I did not want them to believe that these voyages were undertaken for economic reasons alone. The driving forces to break out of the confines of Europe are much larger and cannot be so reduced. During the Renaissance the world was beginning to be perceived more consciously, and the desire to come to a greater understanding of one's surroundings through scientific observation and logical thinking could no longer be held back. This age can be viewed as another significant step toward freedom, with all the attendant dangers involved. The play portrays a fictitious account Henry the Navigator's impulse to set sail into uncharted territory, followed by a dramatic account of one of Bartholomew Dias' mutinous journeys. 20+ characters (many roles may be doubled). Length: 50 minutes.
